Meeting Stakeholders Where They Are: Driving Alignment and Change

10h00 - 10h50 Itumeleng Khala / Senior Business Analyst at Absa
Itumeleng Khala - Business Analysis Summit 2026 South Africa

Successful change is not driven by system requirements alone. It happens when stakeholders’ end-to-end perspectives are understood, messages are communicated in ways that resonate with them, and diverse voices are aligned around a shared outcome.

Reflecting on one of the most complex transformation initiatives she has worked on, Itumeleng Khala found that the greatest challenge was not defining requirements: it was aligning people. The initiative involved multiple branch operation touchpoints and stakeholders across several business and support functions, each viewing the solution through a different lens — Operations focused on execution, Legal and Compliance on regulatory obligations, Customer Experience on the customer journey, and Executives on strategic outcomes.

While everyone was working towards the same goal, differing perspectives created complexity and competing priorities. One lesson quickly became clear: stakeholder engagement is not about securing attendance at meetings or obtaining approvals. It is about creating a shared understanding of the outcome being pursued. This required continuous stakeholder analysis — identifying who needed to be involved, understanding the impact on their area, and tailoring conversations to what mattered most to them.

Key Takeaways

  • Know your stakeholder and tailor the message: different stakeholders connect to the same solution in different ways, so communicate in a language that resonates with each audience.
  • Business Analysis extends beyond requirements: some of the greatest value a Business Analyst delivers comes from connecting people, surfacing dependencies, and building shared understanding.
  • Alignment is an ongoing practice: when uncertainty or disagreement arises, engage early and often, as alignment rarely happens in a single conversation.
